Winsam Cellphone Photography Workshop – 20171001

In order of age (or is it beauty?), Jaime, JJ, Raffy, and Glynis came to my Sunday Cellphone Photography Workshop.

It’s not the camera but the photographer who takes the shot. Some of our photos taken with a cellphone are much better than what an amateur can take with an expensive DSLR camera.

The workshoppers came with varying degrees of aptitude and interest. One was interested in travel photography; he would be going to Europe soon. One was very much into street photography.

I adopt my workshops to the needs of my workshoppers so I ditched my presentation for Portrait Photography and talked about composition, proper exposure, and how to catch what Henri Cartier-Bresson calls “the decisive moment.”

The workshoppers soaked the teachings like a sponge. Here are some of their photos from the workshop photo walk:

Photo of the Day: Boracay Paraw Sail Boat

When they told us the boat could take 10 passengers, didn’t think we’d be sitting on the sailboat’s outrigs.

I should have taken the little boy hawker’s offer to buy a plastic supot to put my cellphone in. I thought I could just put it inside my jacket.

Little did I know that waves would be crashing on me as I was precariously balanced on balance beams spreading from boat’s sides like a spider’s spindly legs.

But I’m a photographer and I need to take photos. As sun set, I took the cellphone out. It had a fisheye lens on, which was serendipitously appropriate for the setting.

I’m just glad I didn’t lose my phone to the fishes.

Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas basketball team in 2017 FIBA Asia Champions Cup – Promo Material

Less than a fortnight ago, on Sep. 13 to be exact, I was asked to shoot the Chooks-to-Go star players for Sports5 promotional material.

It was a challenging three hours, both physically and mentally, as I tried to find good angles with which to shoot the players. They were seldom still, often frenetically running up and down the basketball court.

I did pose some of the players according to the pegs that Sports5 marketing maven, Rissa Guilas. (Yes, she has an appropriate name for covering the Philippine team.)

Shot volleyball libero Jheck Dionela for Sorrento Sunwear – 20170130

We’ve been getting athletes to endorse Sorrento Sunwear. Jheck was one of the first. She’s vibrant and fun with a large following on social media.

We’ve also shot her at one of our Photography workshops.

I don’t like using cliches but Jheck is a great gal. Really fun working with her.

Photo of the Day: Jica Lapeña

Sometimes it’s great working with an inexperienced model, not saddled with stock poses and attitude.

I shot Jica when she was still a freshman Fine Arts student, if I remember right. She was new to modeling but she was bold and audacious, which suited the dramatic lighting and concept of the workshop shoot.
